Mapping the Underworld

AIM: to develop the means to locate, map in 3-D and record, using a single shared multi-sensor platform, the position of all buried utility assets without excavation

Objectives:

  • Develop a prototype multi-sensor device for the detection of underground utilities without the need for excavations.
  • Combine findings with existing shallow surface soil to make ground 3D maps, in collaboration with the British Geological Society to prove the concept of creating UK-wide geophysical property maps for different technologies.
  • Explore knowledge-guided interpretation, using information obtained from integrated utility databases being generated in the DTI (BERR)-funded project VISTA.
